Chevron's Excel By Five Program Deserves Our Support
Posted: June 13, 2007
Newborns come into the world ready to learn. Scientific studies done in the last 30 years show that the effects of quality, nurturing care received by babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers can be measured into adulthood. Something as simply as reading to a child every day has an enormous and lasting impact.
It's apparent Chevron's Excel by Five program, coordinated by Mississippi State University's Early Childhood Institute, is helping communities build and improve support systems for young children.
Currently being tested in six Mississippi communities, including Pascagoula and Petal, Excel by Five will soon become available to other communities across Mississippi.
By supporting parents and their children, Excel by Five is a way for communities to become certified "child friendly" for its youngest citizens. Excel by Five's goal is for all children to begin kindergarten healthy, happy and eager to learn. Now that's something we should all get behind.
