On Saturday, July 30, 2011, Monroe County children and their families enjoyed a “Treasure Hunt” to help them prepare to go to Kindergarten; as well as fun, games, food and more! Their treasure maps led them from station to station where they performed different actions such as cutting with scissors, identifying letters, naming colors and shapes – all in accordance with the newly adopted Common Core Curriculum standards for Mississippi schools. They were rewarded with pirate “loot” such as pirate hats, eye patches, gold coins, compasses and more, in addition to school supplies such as scissors, colors and pencils. They enjoyed entertainment from Ms. Maura McIntosh and a delicious lunch, followed by a yummy “treasure map” cake. GELI Dog also made an appearance and read books to the children and their families.
