A golfer in town for the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic took time off the green to read to some Biloxi children Tuesday. Pro golfer, Fred Funk, read to a group of 2 through 5 year olds Tuesday afternoon to promote early literacy.

The event is a partnership between the golf tournament, Chevron, and the Excel by 5 Initiative, which is aimed at getting youngsters ready for school.

The Champions Tour professional was happy to engage the young group at the Biloxi Resource Center before he plays in the tournament this weekend. Funk says, “It’s a feel good thing. I was supposed to go golfing with some of my buddies, but I told them, it’s in the middle of the day at 1 o’clock and I’m going to do it. The brain is like a sponge early on. The sooner you get them, the better. Great concept, but I had a great time. It was fun for me.” Funk read Curious George Plays Mini Golf, a fitting story, to engage the youngsters’ minds.
