The city of Biloxi and Biloxi Excel By 5 teamed up this weekend to educate parents and children on safety issues.  The approach of summer provided an excellent opportunity for several local agencies to remind families of ways to stay safe.

Biloxi Excel By 5 Program Honored by Biloxi Public Schools

Honorees from Week 4 of Biloxi Public Schools month (an excerpt from Biloxi Public School's E-news, The Windtalker)

    A pioneering early learning program for pre-schoolers, a 10th grade girls softball player, the top Advanced Reader in first grade at North Bay, and an inspirational school resource officer comprise the wrap-up winners of the first-ever Biloxi Public Schools Month.

Biloxi Excel By 5 Event Helps Prepare Students for Kindergarten

Biloxi Excel By 5, together with the Biloxi Public School System, City of Biloxi, and IP Casino Resort Spa, held a "Count Down to Readiness" event on April 25, 2014.  The purpose of the event was to educate students who will enter kindergarten in August, and their parents, on basic kindergarten expectations. Children were given orientations focusing on cafeteria, schoolbus and classroom procedures.  The Biloxi Police Department provided fingerprinting and safety information.  Students also engaged in age-appropriate activities highlighting kindergarten basic skills.

A golfer in town for the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic took time off the green to read to some Biloxi children Tuesday. Pro golfer, Fred Funk, read to a group of 2 through 5 year olds Tuesday afternoon to promote early literacy.

About ten students recite nursery rhymes at the Biloxi Excel by 5 Family Resource Center at the old Lopez school. They're taking part in a free class called "Teaching Tots on Tuesdays," one of the many things the Biloxi Excel by 5 coalition is doing to help make sure south Mississippi children are ready for school before they enter Kindergarten.
